ABOUT
João Magalhães is a Portuguese Writer-Director based in the UK. After finishing his Film Production BA at Southampton Solent University in 2021, João took his graduate short film “Alaúde” (available on Youtube), a neo-realist-inspired drama, to a successful festival run.
Since then, João has collaborated with the independent band Belle Dame and directed two music videos titled “Mary Sue” (available on Youtube) and “Calico”, which will be released on May 30, this year.
João has also worked as a 1st Assistant Director in various short films and in the upcoming feature film “Contrails Over the Country Club” with the company Firebird Films. Alongside that, he has produced two independent low budget short films for director Daniel Ellerby, who is currently doing a masters in Directing at NFTS.
As a director, João is interested in genre-based storytelling with a footprint in socially relevant themes and power dynamics. He is looking into exploring all of these things in his next short film “Over Cooked Diet”.
